Mykonos Holidays – Dive Into Luxury

Mykonos is one of the most famous islands for vacation in Greece – and for good reason.

As tourism has been rapidly growing in the country for the last decades, Greece has become one of the most popular tourist destinations attracting more and more people from all over the world.

Mykonos is widely known as a “party island” but there is no doubt that it has something for everybody. There’s more to the well-known party life of Mykonos, like its amazing landscapes with its blue-painted houses, crystal blue waters, and magnificent beaches.

“The island of the winds”, as they call it, is a dive into luxury. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

How to Approach (port/airport)

Being very popular, Mykonos is one of the most accessible Greek islands. There is both an airport and a port, so you can conveniently reach Mykonos by air or by sea

Direct flights from Greece’s capital Athens are always available throughout the year, as well as from numerous other cities in Europe.

If you prefer to make your trip by sea in order to enjoy the Aegean sea, you can arrange either a fast or a slow ferry boat route from Athens to Mykonos. You have to take into account that during the low season (mid of October to end of May), ferries come and go less frequently, so make sure to check the schedule if you’re travelling at this time of the year.

From Athens by Plane

There is no doubt that the quickest way to reach Mykonos is by plane. You can find direct flights from Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) to Mykonos International Airport (JMK) available all along the year.

The duration of the flight is approximately 60 minutes, without including the time to/ from the airport. The Athens airport is about 30 to 45 minutes from the city center and there are many ways that it can be reached, like by rental car, taxi, private transfer, bus or metro.

As you can imagine, the flights are rather full during summer, so you have to make sure that you book in advance if you’re travelling then.

If you want to fly directly to Mykonos from a European airport, there are many options: Zurich, Amsterdam, Manchester, Vienna, Paris, Lyon, Barcelona, Stockholm, Venice, Rome, Napoli, Florence, Naples, Berlin, and Munich, to name just a few!

From Athens by Ferry Boat

The trip, in this case, varies from 2.30 to 9.30 hours long.

There are 2 ports in Athens, Piraeus and Rafina, which offer either fast or slow ferry routes to Mykonos. Getting a ‘flying dolphin’ (a compact fast ferry) you can arrive at Mykonos in two and a half hours. With slower ferries, you might need to spend up to nine hours travelling. Lastly, there are more ferry alternatives, which last about four and a half hours.

High-speed ferries are easily filled up during summer, as it is the first pick for travellers, so you have to book them many days in advance. Note that these ferries can be harsh on those prone to seasickness as they get quite jarring in case of strong winds.

Whether you choose a fast or a slower ferry route, you can get both economy and business class tickets. In case you choose the slower route, it is highly recommended that you book a ticket with a numbered seat so you can have a rather comfortable trip to the island. Keep in mind that cabins are also available.

Last but not least, you can board your own car or motorbike on all ferries, so you won’t have to search for rentals on the island.

From Other Greek Locations by Plane

Not all Greek islands have airports but should you find yourself on those that do, such as Crete, Santorini, or Paros, you can easily travel to Mykonos by air and save precious time for your holidays.

We have to point out that there are no direct flights that connect the Greek islands, so you always have to make a stop-over at Athens airport before flying to Mykonos

From Other Greek Islands by Ferry Boat

Most of the Greek islands offer different kinds of routes to Mykonos. If you are already in the Cycladic Islands, you can get either a fast or a slow ferry boat to transport you to Mykonos.

If no direct ferry is available, you can easily find an “indirect” ferry to Mykonos. These ferries make stops to other islands as well, so your journey will take longer. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t reach Mykonos on the same day.

Last but not least, you can arrange a private transfer to Mykonos from the nearby islands. Of course, the cost here gets pretty high.

Where/ What to Eat

Apart from its superb beaches, scenic windmills, and white-washed houses, foodies have many reasons to visit Mykonos. The island offers plenty of food experiences that you don’t want to miss out on during your stay.

Once in Mykonos for holidays, you should definitely spend some time exploring the island’s culinary charms, as Greek gastronomy is a top-listed global cuisine. Many travellers have difficulty in choosing where to eat in Mykonos, as there are countless options, ranging from fine dining restaurants to traditional tavernas.

Blessed by its climate & location, the greek dishes are made of fresh vegetables and the famous greek feta cheese, which you should absolutely taste.  There are also many artisans producing local specialties like louza (spicy pork) or kopanisti (soft cheese with spices). Pro tip: combine them with a bottle of local white wine to make the perfect match!

When it comes to seafood choices, you won’t be disappointed either. The Aegean sea provides wide access to some of the best fish and seafood. Accordingly, you will have the chance to taste fresh lobsters, red mullets, prawns, and octopi.

Furthermore, you should not miss the chance to taste the ultimate Greek fast food, which is souvlaki & gyros. Being a fast food, it is also considerably cheaper than most other options. The traditional souvlaki is filled with pork meat, tomatoes, french fries, onions, and the famous creamy tzatziki.

And, if you are lucky enough to stay in a luxury villa, you can experience a private chef catering, full of greek flavours and ingredients.

For such a small island, there are many options to choose from. Here are some of the best!

Kiki’s Tavern

One of the most popular and delicious spots in Mykonos. Kiki’s Tavern is located on a little beach hut without electricity. They cook with just a grill using fresh local food and lots of wine. Kiki’s tavern has no website – not even a signboard in front. The food is simply amazing and the menu includes dishes such as roasted eggplant to shrimp to pork chops. It is absolutely worthwhile waiting in line to see what Kiki’s Tavern has to offer.

Spilia

It is hidden in a cave, almost inside the sea, offering a romantic ambience and a delicious menu full of Greek food gems. Book a table right next to the sea for the unspoiled view and just enjoy the scenery. Don’t forget to try the “Mykonian” salad, the lobster pasta, and of course, the fresh octopus which is hanging out to dry.

Bakalo

Bakalo’s food is as unique as is its exterior decor– a traditional house with arched doors and an 18th-century fountain in the courtyard. The restaurant, which is located in the Lakka area, offers a menu that enhances your culinary journey to the top. It offers fresh local ingredients and mostly Cycladic dishes like pork with fava, beef with wine sauce, or amberjack skewers.

Nikolas’ Tavern

This tavern is popular for serving fresh fish that’s caught daily by the owner. It is a charming little tavern on the seaside and is located on Agia Anna Beach. It’s always a good idea to book in advance in order to sit at a table on the sand and live this memorable experience the best way possible. Nikolas offers traditional homemade dishes, such as the famous pastitsio and mousaka. It’s a great place to have your meal after swimming and enjoy the breeze of the sea.

Hippie Fish

This is a restaurant located at the beach, with a funky atmosphere and a nice bar, making it an excellent spot for lunch while watching the romantic sunset over Agios Ioannis Beach. It’s an ideal place to relax all day long. The menu is focused on Greek cuisine, with an international touch in the form of crab or salmon, shrimp, or veggie rolls.

Which Beaches Should You Visit / Where to Party

When it comes to beaches, Mykonos offers a variety of choices that satisfy every taste.

If you go to the south coast, you will find beaches with golden sand which are usually everyone’s first choice. Platis Yialos should definitely be pretty high on your list. Should you be there, you have the alternative to book a water taxi and travel around the coast to famous bays like Elia, Paraga, Agrari, Paradise, or Super Paradise.

Speaking of which, Super Paradise is one of the most popular and affordable beach clubs on the island. During the day, the vibes are rather chill but by the evening, it will have become one of the go-to places for beach parties. Keep in mind that during the day you will have to rent a sun lounger.

All these beaches are very popular due to the white sand, the crystal-clear waters, and the fabulous beach bars, playing music all day long. Thanks to their position, the beaches are also sheltered from the wind and so they are considered to be excellent sunbathing scenes.

There are also other beautiful beaches on the south part of the island, like Kalo Livadi, Agios Yiannis, or Ornos, where you can enjoy yourself and unwind from your everyday routine.

Going up to the north side of the island is a completely different kind of story. There are no regular buses going in this direction, so it is better to make this trip by car or motorbike. This fact makes all these beaches a lot quieter and so they are appropriate for people looking for peacefulness and relaxation. Agios Sostis is maybe the best choice in this area, located on the bottom of a magical and rocky path. Arriving there, you will be rewarded with honey-coloured sands and rolling hillsides that extend into a close distance.

Moreover, fans of watersports should visit Ftelia. The beach is located inside the well-known Panormos Bay. It often becomes very windy and that’s why you will see many surfers and other water activities which you can partake in.

Where to Shop

Shopping in Mykonos can be really entertaining as there are numerous choices for shopping. The majority of the shops are gathered in the narrow scenic streets of the town. You will find countless souvenir shops, premium designers boutique shops, art galleries, and many fine jewellery stores offering one-of-a-kind creations.

The shops in Mykonos are open to visitors all day long, so you can plan your shopping from morning time till midnight. And, for the high-end brand lovers, will be happy to know that brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Gucci boutique shops are present on the island.

Visiting Matoyianni Street could be the highlight of your shopping trip. This is where you will explore the Greek bazaar and find a mix of local shops and international shopping stores. Furthermore, you should not miss the chance to visit the local jewellery shops and admire the beauty of Greek jewellery-making firsthand.
